Your First Therapy Session: What To Expect And How To Prepare For It

Deciding to go to therapy is a huge step in the right direction for your wellness journey. However, it can be very intimidating and overwhelming to make that decision in the first place. This is primarily because there is little clarity on what to expect in your first session. This article will help shed light on how to prepare for therapy and what you can expect in your first session.

Things to keep in mind when you are considering therapy:

What are you hoping to achieve through therapy?

This may seem quite obvious but it is worth mentioning that it will help immensely if you have thought about why you decided to seek therapy. Exploring and understanding what you would like to achieve as an ideal outcome of therapy will help both you and your therapist progress in the right direction.

Choosing the right therapist:

This can be a little tricky because every therapist works differently, however with a few screening questions you will be able to figure which therapist will work well for you:

a. Does your therapist have experience dealing with issues you are facing?

b. What certifications and licenses does your therapist have?

c. What types of therapies do they typically deploy?

d. How much do they charge per session

e. What platform or medium of therapy do they provide?

The first session:

The first session can be a little nerve wrecking if you don’t know what to expect. Each therapist conducts their first session differently, but the overarching theme would be to just get to know you a little.

You don’t have to spill your heart out in the first session. This session is an introductory session for both you and the therapist to get to know each other. You can talk about why you decided to start therapy, what you hope to gain out of it and at the same time you can ask your therapist questions about his or her practice and what their process is like and how they structure their therapy session.

Some of the questions you can expect in your first session are:

· Why did you decide to start therapy?

· What goals do you hope to achieve through therapy?

· What does a day in your life look like?

· How is your work life balance?

· Would you like to talk about your childhood ? or your relationship with your parents or spouse?

· Have you experienced any big changes in your life recently?

You and your therapist should discuss the length of your treatment, methods of therapy to be used, and details regarding patient confidentiality

It helps to keep in mind that therapy is not a magic pill, it takes work and a few sessions to see any improvements. However, remember that just because you had a session with your therapist doesn’t mean you are stuck to them. If your therapist doesn’t make you feel comfortable, feel free to try out a different therapist. In the end of the day, your therapist is here to help you make strides in your wellness journey and it is essential that you feel comfortable with them.
