What is Loneliness? How can one try to overcome the feeling?

Loneliness is a feeling that touches us all at different times, shaped by our unique experiences and emotions. It occurs when our need for social connections isn’t met, but it’s important to note that loneliness isn’t the same as being alone. You might feel perfectly content with minimal social interaction, while others might find the same situation isolating.

For some, loneliness comes and goes, while others experience chronic loneliness—a persistent, deep feeling of being alone that lingers even when surrounded by people. This type of loneliness can make you feel isolated, even in a crowd.

There's a common misconception that loneliness only affects those who live alone or lack friends and family. However, you can have an active social life and still feel lonely, especially if you don’t feel truly understood or cared for by those around you.

What causes loneliness?

Loneliness has many different causes, and they vary from person to person. Certain life experiences or events can make you feel lonely, such as:

  • Going through a breakup

  • Changing jobs

  • Moving cities

  • Experiencing mental health problems

  • Becoming a parent

  • Family distress

If you are experiencing any such events, please do not hesitate to contact someone you trust or speak to a professional who can help you through your journey.

Here are some tips to help you overcome loneliness:

  • Enjoy Your Own Company: Learn to be comfortable being alone and appreciate your own company.

  • Speak Up: Don’t be afraid to share your feelings with others.

  • Connect Through Interests: Think about how your hobbies can help you connect with people. If you love reading, join an online book forum or spend time at bookstores before joining a book club. Focus on places where you feel safe and avoid putting too much pressure on yourself.

  • Limit Social Media: Try to reduce your social media use, as it can lead to unhealthy comparisons and increase feelings of loneliness. Remember, social media only shows a tiny fraction of people’s lives.

  • Take Care of Yourself: Engage in physical activities, spend time in nature, or volunteer at an animal shelter if you love animals. Befriending a stray animal can also be fulfilling.

Remember, these tips can help you manage loneliness, and professionals are always available to support you through tough times.
