Let me paint you a picture:
You have just walked into the most beautiful beach you have ever seen in your life, the water is blue, the sand is golden and there seems to be nobody else on the beach for miles. It feels like this beach is your very own paradise.
You waste no time taking your phone out to upload this heavenly view so everyone in your social network can see how peaceful a place you are in. The likes and comments flow in and soon you are in this paradise with your nose deep in your phone.
Sounds about right?
Okay, that might be an extreme example but we are all guilty of some version of that story.
Living in the moment can be hard, especially when you have many tempting distractions. We often spend more time thinking about what’s coming up in the future. Or dwelling on things in the past we can’t change. In the process, we end up missing out on experiencing the present.
It takes work and a lot of practice, but you can train yourself to become fully aware of what’s going on inside and around you—your thoughts, feelings, sensations, and environment. You observe these moments without judgment. This is called mindfulness.
Here are some tips to help you get started on your mindfulness journey:
Take some deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose to a count of 4, hold for 1 second and then exhale through the mouth to a count of 5. Repeat often.
Enjoy a stroll. As you walk, pay attention to your breath and the sights and sounds around you. If thoughts and worries enter your mind, note them but then return to the present.
Practice mindful eating. Be aware of taste, textures, and flavours in each bite. Listen to when your body is hungry and full.
Do a body scan. Bring your attention to how each part of your body is feeling. This can help you connect with your body.
Find mindfulness resources including online programs and teacher-guided practices.
Consistency and practice will help you unlock many treasures in your mindfulness journey.
